With the help of the Friends of Trailside, Trailside Museum's naturalist staff has completed a study of the Reservation's most threatened reptile species: The Wood Turtle. Why is this research so important? The number of Wood Turtles is quickly declining, and they have been placed on the Endangered Species list for Westchester County. The Reservation is one of only a few places where the Wood Turtle survives in all of Westchester County.

Little is known about their nesting areas, especially those in the Reservation. Once these areas are identified, steps can be taken to protect the eggs from predators, especially raccoons. The more we know about their range, habits, and wintering spots, the better we can help with management techniques. To read more about this Turtle Tracking Project, click here.
